Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Australian cities to protest separate events demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages.
Since the latest Israel-Gaza conflict began on October 7, there have been a number of demonstrations, the most recent of which were held on October 7. That date saw a terrorist attack by Hamas that claimed the lives of roughly 1,200 Israelis; however, Israel’s foreign ministry recently revised that number down from 1,400. According to Gaza health officials, Israeli retaliatory attacks have killed at least 11,078 Palestinians, including 4,506 children, as of Friday. It is estimated that 2,700
people are missing and may be dead or trapped beneath the debris. With its ground invasion of Gaza City aimed at eliminating the militant group, Israel has rejected the increasing calls for a ceasefire, stating that it would not stop until the approximately 240 hostages taken by Hamas were returned. Prominent speakers attended the protests that closed down streets in Australia’s capital cities.
