Land Mine Explosion Kills Four in Northwest Pakistan’s Kurram District

A land mine explosion in northwest Pakistan’s Kurram district has resulted in the death of four people and injured several others, police confirmed on Wednesday. The blast occurred when one of the victims stepped on a land mine in a forested area of the region, which has a history of sectarian violence.

Habibullah Khan, the district police officer, stated that the deceased and the wounded were transported to a hospital in Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. He did not specify the number of injured individuals.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities are investigating the incident. Kurram has historically experienced sectarian clashes between Shiite and Sunni Muslim communities, with militant Sunni groups previously targeting minority Shiites.

A ceasefire, brokered by local elders, has largely held since January, reducing large-scale violence between Sunni and Shiite tribes. However, sporadic gunfire continues, and land mine incidents remain rare.

Shiite Muslims predominantly reside in parts of Kurram, although they are a minority in broader Pakistan, where Sunnis constitute the majority. The region continues to be marked by ongoing sectarian tensions.
