Kim Kardashian Cheers Potential Freedom for Menendez Brothers as Parole Nears

3 min read

US socialite Kim Kardashian is elated at the possibility that Erik and Lyle Menendez, the infamous Menendez brothers, could soon walk free.

Known for her vocal support of the siblings, who were convicted for the murder of their parents in 1989, Kardashian credited the renewed interest in the case to filmmaker Ryan Murphy. Murphy’s recent Netflix docuseries, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, played a significant role in bringing public attention back to the brothers’ plight.

While a parole hearing had already been scheduled before Murphy’s show aired, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón admitted that the documentary significantly heightened public interest, accelerating the process.

Kardashian Celebrates Menendez Brothers’ Resentencing

After examining new evidence, District Attorney George Gascón has proposed resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez and recommended granting them parole. However, the decision came as a surprise, as neither the brothers nor their family were informed prior to the announcement.

“I believe the brothers faced a tremendous amount of dysfunction in their home, including molestation,” Gascón stated, acknowledging the trauma behind the horrific events. Although he stressed that murder can never be justified, Gascón believes that after nearly 30 years in prison, the Menendez brothers have paid their debt to society.

Kim Kardashian, who had previously written an op-ed supporting their release and used her social media influence to rally public backing, expressed her excitement following the DA’s proposal.

“The Menendez brothers were granted a second chance at life and will wake up tomorrow finally eligible for a parole hearing. They could be released in as early as six months,” Kardashian shared on her social media handle.

She extended her gratitude to District Attorney Gascón, saying, “Thank you, George Gascón, for revisiting the Menendez brothers’ case and righting a significant wrong.” Kardashian also thanked the family, friends, and millions of supporters for their unwavering support, adding, “Your voices were heard.”

Acknowledging Ryan Murphy’s Role

Kardashian also credited the power of media in reigniting public interest in the Menendez case, with particular praise for Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series. Monsters, which quickly climbed viewership charts, recounted the story of the Menendez brothers, shedding new light on the complex family dynamics and abuse allegations behind the tragic events. Featuring Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as the brothers’ parents, José and Kitty, and Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez as Erik and Lyle, the series sparked fresh conversation about the brothers’ fate.

“The media’s focus, especially with Ryan Murphy’s show, has really helped highlight the abuse and injustices surrounding their case,” Kardashian noted, emphasizing the influence of storytelling in shaping public opinion. She further stated, “Society’s understanding of child abuse has evolved, and social media empowers us to question the systems in place. This case highlights the importance of challenging decisions and seeking the truth, even when guilt is not in question.”

According to TMZ, District Attorney Gascón is expected to submit legal documents on Friday to request that a judge reduce the brothers’ sentences, making them immediately eligible for parole. Should the judge approve, the California Parole Board will conduct a detailed investigation, schedule a hearing, and potentially set the Menendez brothers free.

Kardashian, who has emerged as a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform, celebrated this latest development as a victory for fairness and accountability, marking a significant moment in the long-running case of the Menendez brothers.
