North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says the country’s upcoming Workers’ Party congress will unveil the next phase of plans to strengthen Pyongyang’s nuclear war deterrent, according to state media outlet KCNA. His comments come just a day after he personally oversaw a successful test of a large‑caliber multiple‑rocket launch system, which he claimed now boasts greater strike power, mobility and accuracy.
Kim framed the weapons test as part of a broader policy to build a reliable offensive capability capable of deterring any attempt to trigger armed conflict with the North. He warned that the latest drill would cause “excruciating mental agony” for forces seeking confrontation with Pyongyang.
The launch believed by South Korea and Japan to involve short‑range ballistic missiles drew swift condemnation from both countries. The missiles landed in the Sea of Japan, violating a long‑standing United Nations ban on North Korea’s ballistic missile development.
KCNA offered no further details about the upcoming party congress, expected to take place within the next several weeks, and Pyongyang has yet to announce official dates. Analysts say the event could outline new military priorities as North Korea accelerates its weapons programs amid rising regional tensions.
