Kate Hudson Reveals She Nearly Played Mary Jane in the Original Spider Man

Kate Hudson has revealed she came close to playing Mary Jane Watson in the first Spider Man film alongside Tobey Maguire. The role ultimately went to Kirsten Dunst, but Hudson says she was originally offered the part.

Speaking during an appearance on a talk show, the actor said she sometimes wonders what it would have been like to join the blockbuster franchise. “It’s one of those things where I look back and think it would have been nice to be in a Spider Man movie,” she said.

Hudson explained that she turned down the role to star in the war drama Four Feathers, which was released a few months after Spider Man. The film paired her with Heath Ledger, who became a close friend. “I got an experience I would never have had otherwise,” she said.

Even so, she admits there is a small part of her that imagines what might have been. “Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to and I’m grateful for it. But I do look at it and think it would have been fun to be Mary Jane.”

Spider Man became one of the biggest hits of 2002 and launched a trilogy directed by Sam Raimi. After Maguire’s run as the web slinging hero, the character was later taken on by Andrew Garfield and is now played by Tom Holland in both standalone films and the wider Marvel universe.
