In a memorable appearance on Saturday Night Live just days before the U.S. election, Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris made a surprise cameo alongside actor Maya Rudolph, who famously portrays her on the show.
The sketch aired on SNL‘s final episode before Election Day, featured a playful and inspiring exchange between the real Harris and her comedic counterpart.
During the sketch, Rudolph, embodying Harris’s poised demeanour, expressed a wish to speak with someone who had “been in her shoes,” specifically a Black, South-Asian woman running for office. As she looked into a mirror, Harris appeared on the other side to the audience’s applause. “You and me both, sister,” Harris replied, offering Rudolph some humorous advice and encouragement.
“I’m here to remind you — you got this. You can do something your opponent cannot do: you can open doors,” Harris said, alluding to a recent viral moment where President Donald Trump struggled to open the door of a garbage truck on the campaign trail in Wisconsin.
The pair traded jokes on “Kamala” rhymes, such as “drama-la,” “step-momala,” and finally, “keep calm-ala and carry on-ala,” a nod to Harris’s affectionate nickname, “Momala,” given by her stepchildren. Rudolph, who first debuted her impression of Harris in 2019, has reprised the role throughout the current season, capturing the vice president’s signature style and humor.
Harris’s appearance marks her first on SNL, a stage frequented by presidential candidates through the years. Former cast member Andy Samberg has portrayed Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, while Dana Carvey returned to the show as Joe Biden, reprising his iconic impressions from the 1990s. Former President Trump also appeared on SNL during his initial run for office in 2015, poking fun at his own larger-than-life personality.
Harris’s SNL cameo brought laughter and a bit of light-hearted inspiration, blending humor with history just before the high-stakes election.
