Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club Shifts Season Amid Water Charge Crisis

1 min read

In a bold move, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club (KBRC) has announced a formal shift of its 2025 racing season to Esperance, citing a staggering 700 percent increase in water charges imposed by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The decision comes after unsuccessful negotiations with local authorities to address a critical water supply issue that jeopardized the racing calendar. Late last year, the KBRC revealed its dire situation, with a severe shortage of available water threatening the upcoming season. With Kalgoorlie’s annual Race Round serving as a significant tourist attraction, the urgency to find a resolution became paramount.

Mayor Glenn Wilson stated that the city had been ready to supply water to the racing club since December 19, but the KBRC contested that the city’s proposal included an alarming 680 percent hike in water fees.

The KBRC emphasized that the irrigation of the racing track has reached a critical point, with only eight days of water supply remaining in its dam. As the clock ticks down, the club’s shift to Esperance marks a significant change in a beloved local tradition, highlighting the pressing challenges of water management in the region.
