A powerful airstrike in Kabul has sparked widespread rumors that Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Noor Wali Mehsud may have been killed. Local media have not confirmed his death, but eyewitnesses reported that a vehicle carrying Mehsud was directly targeted and heavily damaged. He was said to be traveling openly when the strike occurred.
Pakistani outlets suggested that the attack may also have killed Qari Saifullah Mehsud, a close aide and considered a possible successor to Noor Wali, along with several others. However, no official confirmation has been issued, leaving uncertainty over the fate of the TTP leadership.
The strike comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where TTP fighters remain active. Just days earlier, a TTP assault in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa killed 12 Pakistani soldiers, following military operations that had eliminated dozens of militants but left troops vulnerable to ambushes.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had recently warned that Islamabad would no longer tolerate such attacks. Hours after his statement, Kabul residents reported hearing two loud explosions and seeing fighter jets circling overhead, which spread panic across the city.
If Noor Wali Mehsud has indeed been killed, analysts say it would mark a major strategic success for Pakistan, but it could also trigger retaliatory strikes by the TTP, raising fears of renewed instability in the border regions. The situation remains fluid, with both Afghan and Pakistani authorities yet to confirm the outcome of the strike.
