Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed appointed chief justice

Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has been appointed as the chief justice of Bangladesh. President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as the 25th chief justice of the country on Saturday, sources at Bangabhaban said.

Justice Syed Refaat was the senior most judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. He was first appointed as a judge of the Appellate Division and then appointed as the chief justice, according to law ministry officials.

The appointment comes after Obaidul Hassan resigned from his post of chief justice following demonstrations held by students demanding his resignation along with judges of the Appellate Division.
