Julia Roberts is preparing for her latest film After the Hunt to spark conversation well beyond the cinema. At the film’s premiere on September 26, the Oscar winner reflected on its themes and the questions it raises, describing the story as one rooted in “love and forgiveness.”
Roberts explained that a recurring song in the film underscores its emotional core. “There’s a song that plays in this film seven times, and it’s a song about forgiveness,” she said. “It says so much about these relationships and how Luca [Guadagnino] asked us to approach them and construct them, and what he asked of us as artists to articulate in the characters we were portraying. This beautiful story that Nora Garrett wrote is about love, forgiveness, and trying to understand who we really are deep inside.”
Michael Stuhlbarg, who also stars in the film, described the experience of working on the project as both unsettling and layered. “It’s like watching a slow‑motion train wreck. You don’t know what’s going to happen, but you feel something’s coming,” he said. “There are many layers to this gorgeous text and to these extraordinary performers, and you throw yourself into it to pull out what you think is useful.”
