Julia Roberts says her latest film, After the Hunt, is designed to spark conversation, describing it as a story rooted in “love and forgiveness.”
Speaking at the film’s premiere on September 26, Roberts reflected on the project’s themes and its deliberate ambiguity. “There’s a song that plays in this film seven times … and it’s a song about forgiveness,” she explained. “It says so much about these relationships and how Luca [Guadagnino] asked us to approach them and construct them. He always felt that this beautiful story that [screenwriter] Nora Garrett wrote was about love and forgiveness and trying to understand who we really are deep inside of ourselves.”
Michael Stuhlbarg, known for The Shape of Water, Arrival, and Call Me By Your Name, also plays a key role in the film. He described the experience as layered and unsettling: “It’s like watching a slow‑motion train wreck. You don’t know what’s going to happen, but you feel something’s coming. There are many layers to this gorgeous text and these extraordinary performers, and you throw yourself into it to pull out what you think will be useful.”
About After the Hunt
The psychological drama follows Maggie, a promising PhD candidate, who accuses a professor of sexual misconduct—an allegation complicated by the professor’s close connection to her mentor. The film stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield, with Stuhlbarg in a supporting role.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Nora Garrett, the film has been generating significant buzz online since the release of its trailer, with critics noting its moral complexity and emotionally charged performances.
