Millions of Indians came together on Friday to celebrate Holi, the vibrant festival that marks the end of winter and heralds the arrival of spring. Known as the festival of colors, Holi symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated on the last full moon of the lunar month of Phalguna.
The festivities kicked off with bonfires the night before, representing the defeat of the demon Holika, who perished in flames while her nephew was saved by the Hindu deity Vishnu. The following day, people splashed colorful powders at each other, danced to traditional music, and indulged in sweets, embodying a spirit of joy and camaraderie.
One of India’s most significant festivals, Holi also serves as a major homecoming occasion, with many returning to their native towns to reunite with family. “We start our morning by visiting neighbors and friends we haven’t seen in a year, applying colors, and sharing meals together,” said Dr. Ashok Kumar Sharma, a lecturer at Kurukshetra University in Haryana. “Holi is a time to connect and embrace each other, putting aside our differences.”
The legend behind Holi illustrates its deeper meaning. Holika, the demon sister of King Hiranyakashipu, tried to kill her nephew for worshiping Vishnu. However, she was consumed by the flames meant to protect him, reinforcing the festival’s theme of good prevailing over evil.
Ravi Kumar, president of a housing society in Vikaspuri, West Delhi, echoed these sentiments. “This is a community festival where we collectively decide on the special dishes for the occasion, such as mutton and rajma,” he shared. “We also arranged for a DJ to create a festive atmosphere where everyone can dance and celebrate together.”
For children, Holi is a particularly joyous occasion, as it allows them to indulge in playful mischief. “This is the most fun festival of the year for kids,” said Simran Sodhi, a media worker in Delhi. “They can spray colors on strangers and enjoy sweets, pranks, and total freedom.”
Ultimately, Holi is a celebration of family, friendship, and the vibrant bonds that connect people. As the colors of spring emerge, it serves as a reminder of life’s cyclical nature, filled with joy and unity.
