After a month on the sidelines, Josh Hazlewood proved he’s fully fit and ready to make an impact in the Indian Premier League, helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure their first final appearance since 2016. The Australian fast bowler delivered a standout performance, claiming three crucial wickets in a commanding victory over Punjab Kings.
Hazlewood, who had been managing a shoulder injury, showed no signs of strain as he tore through Punjab’s top order. His wickets included the key scalp of captain Shreyas Iyer and fellow Australian Josh Inglis, finishing with impressive figures of 3-21. His return to form couldn’t have come at a better time, especially as he battles for a spot in Australia’s Test squad for the upcoming World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
The competition for a place alongside Scott Boland has intensified. Australian coach Andrew McDonald recently clarified that only one of the duo will travel to London for the WTC final, and Hazlewood’s recent form suggests he’s firmly in the mix. McDonald expressed confidence in Hazlewood’s readiness, despite concerns about him arriving late in London.
“We have seven days of training. It will be good to see everyone come back together,” McDonald told SEN. “It’s a bit of a muddled mess in terms of the prep, with players all over the world, but we’re experienced in preparing remotely and bringing everyone together when it counts.”
He added, “This has been a two-year journey, right back to the last WTC final. The team has zeroed in on it, and it’s a priority for us.”
Australia’s clash with South Africa is set to begin on June 11, and Hazlewood’s strong IPL form could be just what the team needs to bolster their bowling attack for the crucial series.
