Australian champion jet boat driver Justin Roylance has expressed excitement about the construction of a new custom-built jet boat track at the Elmore Field Days site, north of Bendigo, which will host an Australian series event in November next year.
Roylance said the project marks the end of a decade of setbacks in efforts to bring jet boat racing back to Victoria. “We had a few false starts over the last decade trying to get racing back in Victoria,” he explained, adding that the Elmore Events Centre team was “blown away” by the potential of the sport and eager to support its return.
The track, currently under construction, will span an area roughly the size of two football fields. Jet boat racing involves navigating narrow, shallow-water channels surrounded by grass, with multiple islands creating a maze-like course. According to Roylance, a typical race lasts about 45 seconds, with one boat on the track at a time.
The boats themselves are compact but powerful, measuring about four metres in length. Drivers must navigate around 35 intersections in under a minute, demanding both speed and precision. Roylance described the sport as thrilling and highly technical, with each course designed to test reflexes and control.
