Jamaat Leaders Call for Unity and Reform Ahead of 2026 Bangladesh Election

Top leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have urged citizens to remain vigilant against what they described as domestic and foreign conspiracies, calling for unity and sweeping reforms ahead of the general election scheduled for February 2026.

Speaking at events across the country, including in Dhaka, party leaders emphasized the need for justice-based governance, student participation, and citizen engagement to build what they described as a prosperous and corruption-free Bangladesh. They also urged supporters to rally behind Jamaat’s electoral symbol, the Daripalla (scales), which was recently reinstated by the Election Commission.

At a gathering in Tala upazila, Satkhira, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar declared that the nation was waiting for the opportunity to vote for Daripalla. “A new wave has begun to rebuild the country. We aim to transform Bangladesh into a humanitarian nation free from abduction, killing, looting, and corruption,” he said.

Parwar criticized rival parties, claiming Jamaat does not engage in land grabbing, illegal sand extraction, or other corrupt practices. He pledged that under Jamaat’s governance, unemployment would be reduced and peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims would be ensured.

Reflecting on Jamaat’s two-decade alliance with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Parwar said the party now intends to contest elections independently, citing growing demand for change among students. He argued that in 54 years of independence, the Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party had collectively failed to improve people’s lives. He urged voters to treat Jamaat as a “test case” in the upcoming polls.

Nurul Islam Saddam, secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s central committee, highlighted the trust students at four major public universities have placed in Shibir, underscoring the group’s influence among young voters.

The remarks come as Jamaat prepares to re-enter electoral politics after its registration was restored earlier this year, allowing it to contest the 2026 general election under its traditional symbol. Analysts note that Jamaat’s decision to run independently could reshape alliances and voter dynamics in what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.
