Jamaat-e-Islami Leader ATM Azharul Islam Freed After Acquittal in 1971 Crimes Case

ATM Azharul Islam, a prominent figure in Jamaat-e-Islami and a former acting secretary of the organization, has been released from prison following his acquittal by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The court’s decision, announced on Tuesday, cleared him of charges related to crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

The jail authorities confirmed that Azharul Islam was released at 9:05 am on Wednesday from Dhaka Central Jail. His journey through the justice system began when he was first incarcerated on August 23, 2012.

In recent months, Azharul Islam was transferred from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail to Dhaka Central Jail on September 2 last year to receive specialized medical treatment. Shortly thereafter, he was taken to a hospital for further care, reflecting ongoing health concerns amid his legal proceedings.
