Jamaat Chief Shafiqur Rahman Says Party Will Offer “Full Cooperation” to New Government While Acting as a “Principled Opposition”

Bangladesh Jamaat‑e‑Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said his party will work constructively with the incoming government on matters of national interest, while also fulfilling its “constitutional duty as a firm and principled opposition.” He made the remarks in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday evening.

The message came shortly after BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy visit to his residence in Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area. “Where the government acts in the public interest, we will support. Where accountability is required, we will speak. Our objective is not confrontation but correction; not obstruction, but oversight,” Shafiqur wrote.

He added that the people deserve a parliament that “safeguards justice, protects rights and advances the nation with stability and confidence.”

Congratulating Tarique Rahman in advance as the country’s future prime minister, the Jamaat chief described the meeting as “an important moment in our national political journey.” He said the engagement reflected “a spirit of dialogue and responsibility” and hoped it would mark “a new chapter of institutional maturity and mutual respect.”

Shafiqur reiterated Jamaat’s vision of building a Bangladesh “free from fascism, sovereign in its decision‑making and founded upon justice.” He said the party, along with its 11‑party alliance, remains committed to establishing a prosperous and democratic state grounded in constitutional governance.

He also noted that Tarique Rahman assured him that steps were being taken to address incidents of post‑election violence, including attacks on opposition supporters and minority communities. “We welcome this assurance and reiterate that no citizen, regardless of political affiliation, should face intimidation or insecurity,” he said.
