Israel has announced that it has commenced sending troops into northern and southern Gaza, marking a significant escalation in its military operations in the war-torn strip.
Two weeks ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that his cabinet had approved plans to seize control of large areas within Gaza, laying the groundwork for an indefinite occupation of the territory. However, these plans had not been implemented while US President Donald Trump was visiting the Middle East.
On Sunday afternoon, local time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the start of what they are calling “Operation Gideon’s Chariots.” Over the past week, Israeli airstrikes across Gaza intensified, with Palestinian health authorities reporting that more than 460 people have been killed in the ongoing bombardments.
The IDF issued a statement saying, “Over the past week, the Israeli Air Force conducted a preliminary wave of strikes, targeting over 670 Hamas terror sites across the Gaza Strip to disrupt enemy preparations and support ground operations.” Targets included weapon storage facilities, underground terrorist infrastructure, anti-tank missile launchers, and terrorists.
Meanwhile, Gaza health officials reported that Israeli strikes on Saturday night and Sunday morning killed at least 103 people, highlighting the devastating human toll of the renewed violence.
