Israel Begins Gradual Troop Withdrawal from Gaza as Ceasefire Holds

2 min read

Israel has begun phased troop withdrawals from the Gaza Strip following the announcement of a ceasefire. Starting Friday, soldiers were pulled back through the Yellow Line crossing, with evacuations completed from Shejaiya, Al-Tuffah, Zeitoun, and parts of eastern and southern Khan Younis, according to the Israeli Defense Forces. Officials confirmed that troops will continue to withdraw from other areas of Gaza in stages.

The announcement triggered a mass return of displaced Palestinians. By Saturday evening, hundreds of thousands of people left temporary shelters and began heading back to their neighborhoods. Due to fuel shortages and a lack of transportation, many were forced to walk long distances, using routes like Al-Rashid Street and Salah al-Din Road to reach northern Gaza and Gaza City.

However, the return has been met with devastation. Most homes have been reduced to rubble, with many families now setting up tents amid the ruins. Over the past two years of conflict, 90% of Gaza’s buildings have been completely destroyed, and the remaining 10% are partially damaged  the majority being residential structures. This has intensified the humanitarian crisis, leaving returnees without shelter, basic services, or infrastructure.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, 5,000 rescue and aid missions have been launched to assist those returning to war-torn areas. Relief efforts are underway, but the scale of destruction poses immense challenges for recovery and rebuilding.
