An Iranian projectile has struck just outside the Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, sparking a fire that damaged Australian accommodation and medical facilities but caused no injuries. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the incident occurred around 9:15am AEDT, though it remains unclear whether the attack involved a missile or a drone.
The projectile hit a road leading to the base, igniting a blaze that caused minor damage before being brought under control. “I can confirm that no Australian personnel were injured, and everyone is absolutely safe at this point in time,” Mr Albanese said, emphasising that the fire was contained quickly.
More than 100 Australian Defence Force members are stationed at Al Minhad, which also hosts British and a small number of US personnel. Although the base is owned by the UAE, it serves as Australia’s primary military, logistics, surveillance and training hub in the Middle East.
It has been confirmed that the Wedgetail surveillance aircraft, deployed to the region last week, was not at the base when the projectile landed.
This marks the second attack on Al Minhad since the war began, following an earlier Iranian drone strike in the opening days of the conflict. The latest incident underscores the escalating risks facing coalition forces stationed in the region.
