Iran has announced a major expansion of its energy sector, unveiling plans to build eight new nuclear power plants with Russian assistance. Officials say the move will significantly boost the country’s clean and sustainable energy capacity while also reshaping regional geopolitics.
Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), confirmed the plan on Sunday, noting that construction has already begun in Golestan province, where a suitable site has been identified. He added that Iran also sees the need for a new nuclear facility in the country’s northern coastal region.
According to Eslami, once the projects are completed with Russian cooperation, Iran will be able to generate nearly 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power. This would mark a transformative step toward energy self-sufficiency and sustainable development, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security.
