Iran’s economy has a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of about $418 billion, placing it 36th worldwide in terms of economic size. The country faces an unemployment rate of roughly 7.2 percent, reflecting ongoing economic challenges.

The country boasts impressive literacy rates, with adult literacy at 89 percent and youth literacy nearing 99 percent, although these figures vary between rural and urban regions.

Rich in natural resources, Iran is a major player in the global energy market. It ranks as the ninth-largest oil producer and the third-largest natural gas producer in the world, underpinning its strategic importance in regional and global energy supplies.

Situated in Western Asia, Iran shares land borders with seven countries, including Iraq, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkiye, and Armenia. The majority of its population resides in the western part of the country, where rugged mountains are interspersed with fertile valleys and river basins that support much of the nation’s inhabitants.
