Inferno on Hindley Street Contained in Minutes

2 min read

Firefighters raced to a dramatic blaze in Adelaide’s city centre on Monday afternoon, where flames erupted from the front door of a historic building on Hindley Street. The fire broke out around 1:45pm, sending thick smoke billowing above the rooftops and forcing the evacuation of nearby businesses.

Crews arrived to find flames shooting from the entrance of a ground-floor restaurant. Within minutes, about 40 firefighters and 14 vehicles had the blaze under control, though teams remained on site for several hours to secure the area and monitor for flare-ups.

The building, which dates back to the early 1900s, houses several businesses. The fire prompted authorities to block off Hindley Street between Morphett and King William Streets, causing major disruption in the busy precinct.

“When I saw how many fire trucks were there, I knew it was worse than I imagined,” said Jesse Trout, who owns a nearby business. “It was chaos.”

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze. Early estimates place the damage between $300,000 and $400,000. Smoke damage also affected surrounding properties, and crews evacuated the immediate area as a precaution.

Despite the intensity of the fire, swift action from emergency services prevented further destruction and ensured no injuries were reported.
