Inferno at Karachi Shopping Complex Claims 61 Lives

Authorities in Karachi have recovered 30 charred bodies from Gul Plaza, one of the busiest commercial complexes in the city. Investigators have so far identified 15 of the victims, while efforts continue to confirm the identities of the remaining individuals.

The fire broke out on January 17 in the basement of the multi story building. Early findings suggest an electrical short circuit triggered the blaze, which rapidly engulfed the entire structure. Firefighters battled the flames for 24 hours before bringing the situation under control.

Built in 1980, the five story complex spans an area larger than a football field and housed more than 1,200 shops. Most of the businesses were completely destroyed. Witnesses and emergency responders described the incident as the most devastating fire Karachi has seen in decades.

A senior police official confirmed that the 30 bodies were found on the second floor inside a shop named Dubai Crockery. With these recoveries, the death toll from the Gul Plaza tragedy has risen to 61.
