A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Hobart’s eastern shore, where a house fire claimed the life of an infant and left two others seriously injured. The blaze engulfed the residence on Benboyd Circle in Rokeby, which was fully ablaze when fire crews arrived shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday.
In addition to the tragic loss, three other children were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as flames erupted from the windows, filling the air with thick smoke.
One woman, who alerted emergency services, described the scene: “There were flames everywhere, out all the windows, lots of smoke.” She recalled the frantic efforts of neighbors, including one man who bravely used a fire extinguisher to smash windows and rescue children trapped inside. “I heard windows exploding and people screaming,” she added, illustrating the harrowing atmosphere of the moment.
The Tasmania Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, while police prepare a report for the coroner. In a statement, authorities expressed their condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences are with everyone affected.” This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the courage of those who risked everything to help.
