Indian High Commissioner Affirms Strong Ties with Bangladesh Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has emphasized that New Delhi is actively collaborating with the Interim Government of Bangladesh, insisting that the relationship between the two nations is robust and multifaceted, and not defined by any single issue.

Verma made these comments to reporters following his meeting with Acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah at the foreign ministry in Dhaka on Tuesday. He stated, “India and Bangladesh maintain a multifaceted relationship. We have many issues to discuss and cannot limit our relationship based on a single issue.”

The remarks come after the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Verma to express protest over an attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Monday. The attack was reportedly carried out by supporters of various organizations, including Hindu Sangharsh Samity, who claimed it was in response to alleged persecution of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

In his address, Verma underscored India’s commitment to enhancing people-to-people ties and maintaining friendly relations, peace, and security between the two countries. He highlighted ongoing cooperation across multiple sectors, particularly the economy, and noted positive developments in mutual cooperation over the past two months.

In response to the Agartala incident, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed sorrow, reinforcing that diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted. Additionally, disciplinary actions have been taken against local law enforcement, with three sub-inspectors suspended and a deputy superintendent of police reassigned due to alleged negligence in handling the situation. Reports indicate that seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack.
