India on Tuesday advised its citizens to evacuate Tehran as Iran comes under intense Israeli bombardment, with some nationals already fleeing across the Iranian border. The escalation follows Israel’s ongoing attacks four days after launching its strikes on Iran, which has responded with retaliatory strikes.
The Indian foreign ministry issued a statement urging residents who are self-sufficient in transportation to leave the city due to the worsening situation. “Residents who are self-sufficient in terms of transport have also been advised to move out of the city in view of the developing situation,” the statement said.
This warning coincided with comments from US President Donald Trump, an ally of Israel, who urged “everyone” to “immediately” leave the Iranian capital, which houses nearly 10 million people.
India has facilitated the departure of some citizens through the border with Armenia, located hundreds of kilometers northwest of Tehran. The foreign ministry did not specify the exact number of Indians affected but noted that there are approximately 10,000 Indians living in Iran, according to government data from last year.
In addition to Iran, thousands of Indians are in Israel. India has issued advisories for its citizens there to remain vigilant amid the escalating conflict.
