The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially submitted a ‘Letter of Intent’ to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant step in India’s aspirations for the global sporting event, as confirmed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on October 1.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reaffirmed India’s commitment to this goal, declaring in New York that “all possible efforts” are being made to bring the Olympics to India. Highlighting the nation’s rising achievements in sports, he shared his vision for hosting the Summer Olympics, saying, “Very soon, you will witness the Olympics in India.”

India’s momentum in the international sports arena has been building steadily. At the 2023 Asian Games and Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, India crossed the 100-medal milestone for the first time, achieving 107 and 111 medals respectively. In the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India secured 61 medals, with a record 101 medals in the 2010 Games held in Delhi.

At the recently concluded Paris Olympics, India’s athletes brought home six medals, including five bronze and one silver, placing the country in 71st position on the medal tally, while the United States topped the leaderboard with 126 medals.

With a track record of consistent progress in multi-sport events, India is advancing its mission to host the Olympics, aiming to showcase its growing sports infrastructure and achievements on the world stage.
