A court in Islamabad has sentenced former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to seventeen years in prison in the Toshakhana corruption case. Special Judge Shah Rukh Arjumand delivered the verdict on Saturday, also ordering each of them to pay a fine of 16.4 million rupees.
Imran Khan was arrested in August 2023, about a year and a half after losing power following a no confidence vote in parliament in April 2022. He was initially held at Attock Jail in Punjab before being moved to Adiala Jail in September. Due to security concerns, the court conducted proceedings inside Adiala Jail.
The sentences were handed down in connection with two separate Toshakhana related cases. Following the ruling, Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf, described the decision as an act of political retaliation.
Senior PTI leaders Asad Qaiser and Salman Akram Raja told reporters that Imran Khan had sent a message from prison through his lawyer Salman Safdar.
