The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has officially framed charges against 30 individuals accused of involvement in the killing of Abu Sayed. The charges were announced on Wednesday by Chairman Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and two other judges, marking the commencement of the trial process.
Out of the 30 accused, six are currently in custody, while the remaining 24 are fugitives. All six arrestees appeared in court during the proceedings. The arrested individuals include Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain, Police Constable Sujan Chandra Rai, former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam, and Chhatra League activists Imran Chowdhury, Rafiul Hasan Rasel, and Anwar Parvez.
The tribunal had previously scheduled the charges to be framed on August 6, following a hearing held on July 30, led by Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. During that hearing, four government-appointed lawyers represented the 24 fugitives. The charge sheet was submitted two days prior, on July 28, by Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam.
The case revolves around the killing of Abu Sayed, a student leader at Begum Rokeya University, who was shot dead by police during the quota reform movement on July 16 of last year, in front of the university campus in Rangpur. The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for justice for the victim.
