Spanish airline Iberia announced Tuesday that it has launched an investigation following an incident where a passenger requesting a kosher meal received a tray with the words “Free Palestine” written on its packaging. Several other Jewish passengers on the same flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid also received meal trays marked with the initials “FP” for “Free Palestine,” according to DAIA, Argentina’s Jewish community organization. DAIA called the act a “serious act of antisemitism.”
“We strongly condemn this discriminatory act and have contacted the airline authorities to demand explanations and immediate action,” DAIA said in a statement posted on X. The post included a photo showing a meal tray with a handwritten label in black letters reading “Free Palestine.”
Kosher food refers to meals prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary laws.
In its response, Iberia confirmed that some passengers on the flight, which landed early Tuesday, reported seeing “handwritten pro-Palestinian messages” on their meal packaging. The airline stated that its crew documented the incident and took steps to assist those affected, including an apology from the captain.
The airline added that it is conducting an internal investigation and working closely with its catering suppliers to determine how the labels were added. Iberia also emphasized its strong stance against discrimination, incitement to hatred, and any behavior that undermines individual dignity.
This incident follows last month’s controversy when dozens of Jewish teenagers from France were removed from a Vueling flight departing from Valencia, Spain.
