In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, a Sydney court has sentenced Miraj Jafar to 21 years and 6 months in prison for the murder of his pregnant wife, Arnima Hayat. The ruling was delivered by the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Reports indicate that in January 2022, 19-year-old Arnima was brutally killed by Jafar, who subsequently disposed of her body in a bathtub filled with acid. He surrendered to the police nearly 20 hours after the crime. During the hearing, Justice Deborah Sweeney announced the sentence, underscoring the gravity of the offense.

Jafar appeared virtually in court, visibly distressed as he listened to the verdict, with his head bowed and eyes fixed on the ground. Arnima’s parents were present in the courtroom, and they were overcome with emotion upon hearing the sentence. Her father, Abu Hayat, expressed his anguish, saying, “You have killed my daughter, destroyed our future, and shattered my family.”

Arnima had married Jafar against her family’s wishes and was expecting their child at the time of her death. Her parents had immigrated to Australia from Munshiganj, Bangladesh, in 2006. Arnima was a medical student at Western Sydney University and had previously completed her secondary education at a local school, showcasing a bright future that was tragically cut short.
