Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 storm with winds exceeding 250 km/h, has caused catastrophic destruction across the Caribbean. Entire neighborhoods have been flooded, with homes and infrastructure collapsing under the force of the storm. At least 25 people have been confirmed dead.
Jamaica suffered the worst impact. Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the country looked as if it had been “turned into rubble,” with 80 to 90 percent of roofs blown away. Hospitals, libraries, police stations, port facilities, and other government buildings were also badly damaged. At least five deaths have been reported in Jamaica.
In Haiti, severe flooding claimed the lives of at least 20 people, including 10 children. Thousands of Jamaicans have been forced from their homes and are now sheltering in emergency centers. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie confirmed that three men and one woman drowned in floodwaters.
Although Melissa has since weakened to a Category 1 storm, it continues to wreak havoc. Nearly three-quarters of Jamaica remains without electricity, compounding the crisis for residents already struggling with the devastation.
