The death toll from the devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district has climbed to 44, according to the latest update from the Fire Service on Thursday morning.
Reports confirm that 40 victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to injuries in hospital. An additional 45 people remain in critical condition.
The blaze began in bamboo scaffolding used for construction on at least three high-rise buildings before spreading rapidly to other sections of the complex. The site comprises eight blocks with nearly 2,000 flats, making it one of the largest residential complexes in the district.
Authorities have described the incident as one of the worst urban disasters in Hong Kong’s recent history, sparking widespread fear and grief among residents.
