The High Court is set to hear a public interest petition this Sunday regarding the rampant looting of white stones from the Bholaganj tourist zone in Sylhet’s Companiganj upazila. The writ, filed by Advocate Mir AKM Nurun Noby, calls for immediate legal action against those responsible and demands accountability from local authorities accused of inaction.
The petition urges the court to declare the administration’s failure to prevent illegal stone extraction as unlawful and seeks deployment of additional law enforcement to halt further looting. Over the past year, vast quantities of stones have been openly extracted from Bholaganj and Gowainghat, allegedly under the watch of local officials and with the backing of politically connected syndicates.
Environmentalists and civil society groups have raised alarms over the destruction of Sylhet’s natural heritage, blaming a powerful “stone mafia” for exploiting administrative loopholes. In response to mounting public pressure, the Sylhet district administration has formed a three-member inquiry committee and announced a 24-hour joint force deployment in the affected areas.
The upcoming hearing is expected to be a critical step in addressing the unchecked exploitation of natural resources and restoring public trust in environmental governance.
