A dramatic rescue unfolded in Katherine as volunteer emergency services revealed that a passing helicopter pilot dropped a police officer onto the roof of a vehicle trapped in rising floodwaters to save a stranded driver and passenger.

In a video shared on social media, the volunteer unit said the helicopter later returned to retrieve a German Shepherd from the same vehicle and confirmed that everyone made it out safely.

Local resident Jay Jessop has also been ferrying stranded Territorians across swollen rivers in his tinny, helping connect isolated communities with essential supplies. He said a “phenomenal” number of locals had stepped up to help during what he described as “a pretty hectic time.”

Jessop added that volunteers were shocked to discover just how many people were cut off from food and water, highlighting the scale of the emergency and the community’s rapid response.
