In a powerful show of unity and resolve, thousands of leaders and activists from Hefazat-e-Islam converged on the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka to attend their pre-announced grand rally. The gathering aimed to amplify their five-point demand, which includes the immediate withdrawal of numerous cases filed against their leaders and activists.
The rally commenced around 9 am and is expected to continue until 1 pm, according to organizers. Early in the morning, the atmosphere was charged as thousands from different parts of the country began assembling at the venue, with many already filling the iconic park as early as 7 am.
Sources indicate that approximately 300 legal cases are currently pending against Hefazat-e-Islam leaders. The rally’s core demands extend beyond legal relief, calling for justice for those killed during the Shapla Chattar crackdown on May 5, 2013, and the deaths that occurred during protests against the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Dhaka in March 2021. The protesters also seek accountability for the killings during unrest in July and August of 2024.
Additionally, the rally voices opposition to the proposed commission on women’s rights reform. The activists demand an end to what they describe as mass killings and persecution of Muslims in Palestine and India, framing these issues as central to their struggle.
As the rally unfolds, it underscores the group’s continued influence and their unwavering stance on issues they deem vital for their community and religious identity.
