The upcoming week is expected to be extremely rainy in every state in Australia, with several months’ worth of rain expected in just a short amount of time.
In the northwest of the nation, rain is starting to form and is predicted to affect the entire country during the course of the next week.
Rainfall fell on Saturday morning in the northern region of Western Australia, and further rain is predicted for the afternoon and evening.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the downpour is being fuelled by an influx of tropical moisture moving in from the north.
BoM meteorologist Angus Hines said the rain in the northern parts of WA was “very unusual” for this time of year.
“Places might see about 20mm or more … we could see some of those spots see 50 to 70mm throughout the weekend,” he said.
“If we do see those numbers come through, we’re likely to be talking about wet weather records, because getting rain in this part of the country at this time of year is very unusual indeed.”
Hines said the wet weather could impact travel, with rain washing out some roads, making them impassable.
“Rivers may see river level rises, and we may start to see some flooding across the country’s northwest, either this weekend or potentially into next week.”
Thunderstorms are also forecast in Southeast Queensland on Saturday, including Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
However, BoM says the storms are not likely to be severe.
The rain from WA is expected to move across the country in the coming days, getting dragged into the Northern Territory and South Australia on Monday.
