HAZMAT Warning Issued as Major Fire Erupts at Lithium‑Ion Battery Recycling Facility in Perth

1 min read

A man has been taken to hospital and a HAZMAT emergency warning is in place after a serious fire broke out at a lithium‑ion battery recycling facility in Perth’s south‑eastern suburbs on Sunday afternoon.

The warning, issued just before 3pm, urged people in surrounding areas to stay indoors due to potentially hazardous smoke. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) advised residents to close all doors and windows, switch off air‑conditioners and avoid exposure to fumes.

The blaze began at Li‑ion Energy on Burwash Place and was first spotted by Maddington Fire Station officers at 1:45pm. DFES Incident Controller Leigh Bishop said the facility contained around 80 tonnes of lithium‑ion solid‑state batteries, significantly increasing the fire risk and complexity of the response.

Fire crews remain on scene as hazardous materials teams work to contain the blaze and monitor air quality.
