Near Elbow Hill, close to the Lincoln and Birdseye Highways, the arrival of donated hay bales has become a lifeline for the sheep owned by Antonia Haselton and Michael Shakes. Their property outside Cowell on South Australia’s eastern Eyre Peninsula has been severely affected by ongoing drought, just like many farms across the state.
Michael Shakes admitted that after two consecutive difficult years, their farm wasn’t making any money. Yet, he couldn’t hide his relief and gratitude when the relief supplies finally arrived. The hay provides vital sustenance for their sheep and offers a glimmer of hope amid tough conditions.
Like hundreds of other property owners across South Australia, Antonia and Michael have looked westward in search of aid. On Friday, a convoy of 85 trucks carrying thousands of hay bales set out from Norseman in Western Australia. Crossing the Nullarbor, the trucks delivered fodder to farms in need. Organized by charities dedicated to supporting drought-stricken farmers, with backing from the South Australian government, the convoy reached Ceduna on Saturday afternoon. From there, the trucks dispersed to deliver hay to farms across the region, including Wudinna, providing vital relief to struggling farmers.
