Hardline Stance on Homelessness in South-East Queensland

1 min read

Rough sleepers in south-east Queensland face new challenges as the Gold Coast City Council adopts a stricter approach to homelessness. On Tuesday, the council voted to shift from its welfare-first strategy to a compliance-led policy, joining Brisbane City Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council in implementing similar measures.

Under the new policy, individuals camping in parks and other council-managed areas may be fined and have their belongings confiscated if they do not vacate within a specified time. Despite this shift, councillors introduced two amendments to ensure continued support for homeless individuals.

The first amendment commits the council to collaborate with services like the Gold Coast Homelessness Network, reaffirming their dedication to housing and supporting those affected by homelessness. The second amendment mandates “appropriate training” for frontline staff who interact with rough sleepers and issue compliance notices.

Mayor Tom Tate acknowledged the complexity of the situation but expressed optimism, stating, “It’s a complicated scenario, but I think we’re taking a step in the right direction.”
