Hamas Fighters Stage Tunnel Assault on Israeli Forces in Khan Younis

1 min read

Hamas militants launched a coordinated, multi‑front attack on Israeli troops in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis early Wednesday, striking a newly built military post and nearby positions. The group says its fighters used light weapons and grenades against soldiers inside a building adjacent to the post, while a sniper wounded the commander of a Merkava‑4 tank.

The raid also involved mortar fire, anti‑tank rounds, and explosives, triggering hours of fierce clashes before the attackers withdrew. According to the Israeli military, at least 18 Hamas operatives emerged from a tunnel to storm their position, opening fire with machine guns and rocket‑propelled grenades. One soldier was critically injured and two sustained minor wounds.

Israel claims its counter‑attack killed 10 of the assailants, with the rest retreating underground. The incident highlights Hamas’s continued reliance on Gaza’s tunnel network for surprise strikes, even amid heavy fighting and intensified Israeli operations across the enclave.
