At least 11 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed when armed men stormed a hostel in South Africa’s capital Pretoria early Saturday morning. More than a dozen others were injured in the attack, which police say is linked to illegal alcohol sales at the site.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that 25 people were shot, with 14 taken to hospital. The assault occurred in Soshanguve, about 18 kilometers west of Pretoria. Ten victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in hospital.

According to authorities, three gunmen entered an illegal shebeen inside the hostel around 4:30 a.m. local time and opened fire indiscriminately on a group of men drinking. Among the dead were a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.

The incident comes amid rising homicide rates in South Africa, fueling public fear and concern over violent crime. Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers.
