A Georgia man who unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta has been identified as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White. The attack left one police officer dead and sparked renewed debate over vaccine misinformation and public safety.
According to law enforcement sources, White fired dozens of rounds into the CDC’s sprawling campus late Friday afternoon. Before the shooting, he attempted to enter the facility but was stopped by security guards. He then drove to a nearby pharmacy and opened fire, armed with five firearms, including at least one long gun.
DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose was fatally wounded while responding to the scene.
Investigators say White had expressed deep frustration over the COVID-19 vaccine, blaming it for his depression and suicidal thoughts. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he died by police action or took his own life.
The incident has stirred controversy within the public health community. While the Secretary of Health and Human Services expressed solidarity with CDC employees, some former staff members criticized his long-standing vaccine skepticism and called for his resignation, arguing that such rhetoric fuels dangerous consequences.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to piece together the motive and timeline of the attack.
