A protest against President Donald Trump’s policies in Salt Lake City, Utah, turned violent Saturday evening when gunfire left one person with life-threatening injuries, according to police. Three others were taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. during a demonstration that drew approximately 10,000 participants one of several “No Kings” protests across the country opposing Trump’s administration.

Salt Lake City police confirmed that the critically injured individual was transported to a hospital. “We can confirm the shooting resulted in one person being critically injured. The patient has been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the police department posted on social media. They also announced that a person of interest was in custody.

Police Chief Brian Redd emphasized during a news conference that the event leading up to the shooting was “very peaceful.” He explained that the first person detained had a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital, and two other individuals involved were also in custody.

“At this time, there is no ongoing threat to the public,” Redd said, noting that it was too early to determine whether the shooting was politically motivated.

City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the violence, stating, “This act of violence does not define Salt Lake City a Democratic city in a deeply Republican state. The purpose of today’s demonstration was a powerful and peaceful expression until this event, and that cannot be overshadowed.”

She added, “We are a nation that values our First Amendment rights. We deserve to protest in peace, and I hope this incident does not silence the voices of those who wish to be heard.”
