Gun Attack on Tourists in Indian-Controlled Kashmir Leaves Several Feared Dead

Gunmen launched an attack on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, resulting in multiple injuries and fears that several people may have been killed, according to local police who have described the incident as a “terror attack.”

Authorities confirmed that several victims suffered gunshot wounds and have been rushed to nearby hospitals. The area near the popular resort town of Pahalgam—known for its scenic beauty and attracting thousands of visitors annually—has been sealed off by police and military personnel.

The attack targeted a group of mostly Indian nationals visiting Baisaran meadow, located about five kilometers from Pahalgam. The meadow, renowned for its snow-capped mountains and dense pine forests, is a favored destination for tourists, with hundreds visiting every day.

The region remains a flashpoint, with both India and Pakistan claiming sovereignty over the Himalayan territory, which is administered in part by each country. The police have indicated that militants fighting against Indian rule carried out the attack.

Since the insurgency began in 1989, tens of thousands of people have lost their lives amid ongoing violence. Although the number of violent incidents has decreased in recent years, security concerns remain high in the region.
