Government to Reconstitute RAB and Address Extortion Issues

1 min read

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced on Monday that the government has formed a committee to reconstitute the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). This decision follows serious human rights violations committed by law enforcers during the over 15-year Awami League regime.

In a meeting at the home ministry office, Chowdhury also revealed that the government has decided the police will no longer be equipped with lethal weapons. This move aims to address concerns about the misuse of force by law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, the government is taking proactive steps to prevent extortion at livestock markets and on highways ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. At least 100 Ansar personnel will be deployed at each animal market to curb extortion activities. Chowdhury emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and fair environment for both buyers and sellers during this festive period.
