South Australian company Golden North Ice Cream is set to move its processing facility after more than a century in the mid-north town of Laura. The operation will be transferred to Murray Bridge, a little over three hours away in the state’s south-east.
Managing director Dimi Kyriazis explained that the move is driven by the decline in local dairy farmers. “If you go back long enough, there used to be more than 90 dairy farmers in the mid-north,” he said. “Now, there are only about 13.” He added that the company had become a victim of its own success, having maximized output at the Laura site.
“We’ve grown a lot, and to keep expanding that factory would require significant investment. The return on that would no longer be viable,” Kyriazis explained. The company plans to set up at the former site of the Beston Global Food Company, transforming the facility from a cheese factory into an ice cream plant.
“All the cheese equipment is still there,” Kyriazis noted, which offers an opportunity to diversify the brand into new product categories beyond ice cream. The move aims to ensure continued growth while adapting to the changing local dairy landscape.
