Veteran prospector Chris MacGregor couldn’t hide his excitement when he heard about a nearly one-kilogram gold nugget recently unearthed in Western Australia’s Goldfields. His first words: “You lucky people.”
The 895-gram nugget, found near the town of Sandstone, is valued at approximately 165,000 dollars. MacGregor, a Perth resident, praised the prospectors’ dedication, saying, “I’m sure they put in the hours, and that’s what it’s all about. Good luck to them.” He is among many visitors taking advantage of a thriving prospecting season in the region.
James Allison, president of the Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association of Western Australia, pointed out that discoveries like this show “the big gold” is still out there. “With modern technology, many are returning to old grounds and still finding gold,” he said. “That’s why all the caravan parks are full.”
He added, “It’s the allure. If you find just an ounce of gold that’s about the size of a 10-cent piece it’s worth around five thousand dollars.” The region’s booming prospecting activity reflects a renewed enthusiasm for gold hunting and the potential for big finds.
