A consortium has unveiled ambitious plans for a two-tower development on the Gold Coast, which could feature the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.
Melbourne-based developer Anthony Goss first proposed the project, known as One Park Lane, in 2022. Over the past two and a half years, the group has been negotiating with the Queensland government to secure a small parcel of state-owned land adjacent to the site and to gain approval to build beneath a major road that is under state control.
The proposed development includes a striking 101-storey tower with 198 residential apartments and a 60-storey office building. The towers will be linked by a sky bridge on the 22nd floor and topped with a three-storey sculptural canopy at their base.
If approved and built, the complex will reach 393 metres above the Southport Broadwater, surpassing the nearby Q1 building’s 322-metre spire and Melbourne’s Australia 108 at 316 metres. However, it will still fall short of the world’s tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 830 metres.
Baracon development manager Brett Rogers indicated that early works could commence before Christmas if approvals are granted swiftly. He did not specify the pricing for the apartments but emphasized the project’s potential to address the Gold Coast’s housing shortage and boost economic activity.
The site, spanning 1,500 square metres next to a light rail station and close to a public park, is in a zone with no height restrictions. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has also proposed developing a $480 million indoor arena at the nearby park ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
